The Capulin Volcano View House sits on a working cattle ranch in northeastern New Mexico — 35 miles west of Raton on Highway 64, just outside Des Moines. Capulin Volcano National Monument is visible from the property. This is the closest lodging to the crater rim.

The juniper plank ceiling was harvested on the ranch, hauled out of the woods, and milled locally. Everything here was built to last, by hand, by the person who owns it. Nathaniel is available by text throughout your stay.

The drive to Capulin Volcano passes through Folsom, New Mexico — one of the most quietly extraordinary villages in the American West. This is where George McJunkin, a Black cowboy born into slavery in Texas, discovered prehistoric bison bones in 1908 that pushed back the documented timeline of human presence in North America by 5,000 years. Where Black Jack Ketchum robbed the Colorado Southern railroad three times before a conductor's shotgun ended his run. Where Sally Rooke stayed at her telephone switchboard through the great flood until the water took her.

Max Evans called this the Hi-Lo Country — the windswept volcanic grasslands where he ranched as a young man near Raton. His novel became a film produced by Martin Scorsese, starring Woody Harrelson and Sam Elliott. Billy the Kid rode this range. The Folsom Museum is worth a stop on your way to or from the volcano.

This is a working cattle ranch in rural northeastern New Mexico. Expect bugs, dust, and tons of wildlife. The nearest grocery store is in Raton (35 miles) or Clayton. Stock up before you arrive.
